On a whim we took a last minute (and very quick!) visit to Welshpool at the weekend. We hit a bit of traffic because the bank holiday weekend meant it was busier than usual but when I finally got there it was worth the trip.
I have an interest in all things new age and discovered The Witch of the Willows craft shop, where I spent more money than I planned! If you like incense, candles, spell craft and crystals, this is a great place to stock up, or find an unusual gift.
Unfortunately Welshpool has its share of closed shops and it was a shame to see so many units empty, but there are plenty of independent stores that are thriving. The town also has a great selection of charity shops, ideal if you like a second hand bargain.
For lunch we ventured to the Bay Tree Vintage Tea Rooms which has a great atmosphere and lunch menu. The staff were friendly and helpful and the place manages to keep a vintage vibe without being too old fashioned. We were a bit surprised to learn that in the evenings it is a karaoke and cocktail bar and if we’d been staying in the town a bit longer we might have hung around to see some of the locals belting out their favourite songs.
Welshpool is located close to the border and other highlights for visitors include the Old Station on the edge of town, where you’ll find craft and gift shops as well as a cafe. Powis Castle is just outside the town and makes a great day out too (more detailed post to come on this one!) or if you want to take in some of the scenery, a trip on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway might be more your thing.
